Mbio was founded by Dr Jim mills in early 2019.  Jim has over 20 years’ experience in the biopharmaceutical industry in a number of wide-ranging roles including bioprocess development, GMP manufacturing, Quality, technical and business operations.

Before founding Mbio, Jim spent several years as Senior Vice President Technical Operations at Abzena, the multinational biologics contract research, development and GMP manufacturing organisation.  At Abzena Jim was responsible for process development and GMP manufacturing at the companies San Diego biologics plant, group-wide Quality, facilities, health and safety, IT, HR and program management.  Early in his time at Abzena, Jim was part of the team that successfully completed the acquisition of the companies two US sites in San Diego and Bristol, Pennsylvania, doubling the size of the company and enabling Abzena to provide an end-to-end service offering.  Prior to joining Abzena, Jim was CEO of Cantab Biopharmaceuticals a private-equity owned biotech company focussed on the development of “biosuperior” products.

Earlier in his career Jim held senior positions at some of the UK’s premiere biotech companies including Xenova Biomanufacturing (Director of Operations) and Xenova Research Ltd (Leader, Upstream Process Development and Technical Business Development). Jim originally joined Cantab Pharmaceuticals, before its acquisition by Xenova, as a senior scientist in Upstream Process development and GMP Manufacturing in 1997.  Jim has a PhD in microbial physiology and biochemistry and a first degree in biotechnology.
